A kayaking adventure in Methoni and the island of Sapientza
Description
The Place
Methoni was once the “eye” of Venice in the Mediterranean and an important commercial and naval hub for the Venetians during medieval times. The castle of Methoni is the most impressive fortress in the Peloponnese, built on a rock that juts into the sea and connected to the mainland by a stone bridge. Just across from Methoni lies the lush, green island of Sapientza, part of the Natura 2000 network and home to rare species of flora and fauna. Near the island’s shores lie numerous shipwrecks, some of which are still visible with a mask and snorkel. Kayaking in Methoni offers a unique way to explore the region.
The Activity
Our journey begins at the beach of Methoni, right next to the striking fortress. Your guide will brief you on paddling techniques, safety procedures, and equipment before we set off on a somewhat demanding kayaking adventure. As we paddle along the imposing walls of the castle, we take in its impressive arches and bastions — a true journey back in time to Methoni’s medieval past.
Soon, we’ll cross the channel between Methoni and Sapientza, where numerous ancient shipwrecks are scattered. We’ll have the chance to swim along the island’s northern coast, using mask and snorkel to search for visible remnants of the wrecks. Following the shoreline, we’ll reach the island’s beautiful beach. Here, we’ll relax, swim, and enjoy a homemade picnic with local delicacies.
