Ferry Travel in Greece: Discovering the Islands by Sea

Traveling by ferry is one of the most scenic and popular ways to get around Greece. Ideal for those who want to enjoy the sea breeze, travel comfortably, and reach destinations not easily accessible by other means, ferry connections offer a unique experience. With hundreds of islands and an extensive coastline, Greece boasts one of the most developed ferry networks in Europe.

Routes cover the entire country – from the Cyclades and the Dodecanese to the North Aegean, the Ionian Islands, and Crete. Ferry schedules are frequent, especially during the summer season, and include a variety of options such as high-speed vessels, conventional ferries, and car ferries.

Main Departure Ports

The Attica region has three major ports serving the majority of ferry passengers:

  • Port of Piraeus: The largest and busiest port in Greece, offering daily routes to most island destinations.
  • Port of Rafina: Located east of Athens, this port mainly serves the Cyclades and is easily accessible via Attiki Odos (Attica Highway).
  • Port of Lavrio: A smaller port with routes to Kea, Kythnos, and other islands, offering a quieter alternative with convenient access for some locations.

For ticket prices, schedules, and bookings, visit the official websites of ferry operators or use online booking platforms.
