Train Travel in Greece: Comfort and Scenic Routes

Traveling by train in Greece is a relaxing and scenic way to explore the country, perfect for those who prefer stress-free travel and want to enjoy the journey itself. The national railway network covers the main corridors of mainland Greece, connecting major cities, tourist destinations, and historical sites.

The most popular and frequent routes are between Athens and Thessaloniki, as well as other key cities such as Larissa and Volos. Modern InterCity trains and newly upgraded rail infrastructure make train travel reliable, comfortable, and often quite affordable.

Advantages of Train Travel

  • Comfort and ease, without the stress of driving or traffic
  • Beautiful landscapes along the way (e.g., the Tithorea–Domokos section)
  • Affordable fares, with online booking and discounts for students, youth, and families
  • Convenient central stations with access to local transport networks

All major routes are operated by Hellenic Train (formerly TrainOSE), and some regions are also served by suburban rail lines (Proastiakos).
